Biography
Dr. Jianlong Fu is a Principal Research Manager at Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), where he leads research and innovation in the Multimodal Computing Group. His research focuses on the paradigm shift from passive multimedia content comprehension to active, embodied perception, across diverse media and robotic agents. He consistently pursues high-impact research and has received several prestigious Paper Awards, including ACM Multimedia 2018 (for Image-to-Poem Generation), ACM Multimedia Asia 2024 (for Video Understanding, Reasoning, and Captioning), and International Conference on Multimedia Modeling 2025 (for Robotic Agent Policy Learning). He leads a team that has won more than ten international competition championships at leading computer vision conferences such as CVPR, ICCV, and ECCV. In addition, he leads the team in transferring advanced technologies into major Microsoft products, including Azure, Windows, Office, Bing, Edge, impacting hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
Dr. Fu serves as vice chair of the Automotive Consumer Electronics Applications Technical Committee under IEEE CTSoc, promoting advancements in consumer digital media and intelligent agents across both virtual and physical environments. He has served on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (Guest Editor, 2019–2021), IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine (2021–present), IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (2022–present), and ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications (2024–present). He has also been an active member of the organizing committees for major international conferences, including ACM Multimedia 2021/2026, ICCE Berlin 2023, and IEEE GEM 2025. Dr. Fu received Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was named an ACM SIGMM Rising Star in 2022, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in 2023, and one of MIT Technology Review's Innovators in Intelligent Computing in 2023.
